Gifts to the Pope become property of the Catholic Church. Per Reuters:

In the past, most gifts given to popes have either been quietly given away to missions, church institutions, or have gathered dust in a Vatican warehouse.

Pope Francis has adopted a different approach, at least for some of the more notable and expensive gifts he has received — auctioning them to raise money for the poor.
